The purpose of these Regulations is to define the basic principles for the operation of the Center for Applied Cultural Studies and the publication and editorial management of the academic journal EPISTÉMÈ. These Regulations aim to ensure the continuity, academic quality, editorial transparency, and institutional responsibility of the journal.
These Regulations apply to the institutional operation of the Center for Applied Cultural Studies in relation to the publication of EPISTÉMÈ, as well as to the journal’s publication schedule, editorial organization, and basic editorial management.
EPISTÉMÈ is published by the Center for Applied Cultural Studies. The Center is responsible for supporting the publication, editorial management, and academic development of the journal.
The Center for Applied Cultural Studies was established in May 2006 as an affiliated research institute of the College of Liberal Arts at Korea University. The establishment of the Center was approved by the university administration in order to promote interdisciplinary research on culture, media, art, society, communication, technology, and the humanities.
The establishment of the Center was initiated in the first half of 2006 under the leadership of a Preparatory Committee. The Center was founded through the participation of approximately twenty founding faculty members from diverse academic fields, reflecting its interdisciplinary orientation from the outset.

The Center aims to promote interdisciplinary research on contemporary culture and its transformations by bringing together perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, media studies, art, communication, technology, and related fields. The Center seeks to contribute to the development of new academic paradigms for the study of culture, society, media, and meaning-making practices.

The publication of EPISTÉMÈ is one of the major academic projects of the Center. Through the journal, the Center promotes scholarly communication, supports interdisciplinary research, and contributes to the domestic and international dissemination of research in the humanities and social sciences.
The Center is responsible for supporting the publication, editorial management, academic development, and continuity of EPISTÉMÈ. The Center may provide administrative, academic, and institutional support necessary for the stable publication and development of the journal.
The official title of the journal is EPISTÉMÈ.
The journal is published by the Center for Applied Cultural Studies.
EPISTÉMÈ was first published in 2007.
EPISTÉMÈ is published quarterly.
The journal is published four times a year. The regular publication dates are March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.
The language of publication is English.
EPISTÉMÈ may be published in online or other appropriate formats. The journal provides access to published articles through its official website and relevant academic databases.
The journal may publish regular issues and special issues. Special issues may be organized around specific academic themes in accordance with the editorial direction of the journal and the decision of the Editorial Board.
The Center for Applied Cultural Studies shall establish the Editorial Board of EPISTÉMÈ for the purpose of managing the editorial direction, academic quality, and publication process of the journal.
The Editorial Board shall consist of the Editor-in-Chief, editorial board members, and an editorial secretary or managing editor when necessary. Editorial board members shall be appointed from among scholars with expertise and research achievements in fields related to the scope of the journal.
Editorial board members may be appointed from domestic and international scholars in the fields of the humanities, semiotics, cultural studies, media studies, communication, art, social theory, and other relevant academic areas. The composition of the Editorial Board shall reflect the academic scope, interdisciplinary orientation, and international development of the journal.
The Editor-in-Chief represents the Editorial Board and oversees the overall editorial management of the journal. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for coordinating the editorial direction, publication schedule, editorial meetings, and other major matters related to the publication of EPISTÉMÈ.
Editorial board members shall participate in the academic and editorial development of the journal. Their duties may include advising on editorial policy, planning regular and special issues, recommending reviewers, reviewing the suitability of submitted manuscripts, supporting international academic exchange, and contributing to the improvement of the journal’s academic quality.
The editorial secretary or managing editor shall assist the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board by managing editorial communication, publication schedules, administrative procedures, and other practical tasks necessary for the operation of the journal.
The term of office of the Editor-in-Chief and editorial board members shall be two years. Reappointment is permitted.
Editorial Board meetings may be convened by the Editor-in-Chief when necessary. Meetings may be held in person, online, or in writing. The Editorial Board may deliberate on matters concerning editorial policy, publication planning, special issue planning, journal development, and other issues necessary for the operation of the journal.
Editorial Board meetings shall be valid with the attendance of at least two-thirds of the current members. Decisions shall be made by a majority vote of the members present. When necessary, decisions may also be made through written or electronic consultation.
The Editorial Board may appoint guest editors or special editors when necessary for the planning and publication of special issues. Guest editors or special editors shall be scholars with expertise in the relevant theme of the special issue and may participate in proposing the theme, advising on editorial direction, recommending contributors, and enhancing the academic quality of the issue. The final responsibility for publication and editorial management remains with the Editorial Board.
Matters concerning manuscript submission, peer review, research ethics, publication ethics, copyright, plagiarism screening, open access, licensing, and manuscript preparation shall be governed by the journal’s separate policies and guidelines, including Ethics & Policies, Copyright Notice, Author Guidelines, and the instructions provided through the online submission system.
Matters not specified in these Regulations shall be determined by the Center for Applied Cultural Studies and the Editorial Board in accordance with the purpose of these Regulations, the academic standards of the journal, and generally accepted principles of scholarly publishing.
These Regulations shall take effect on the date of approval by the Center for Applied Cultural Studies.
